There have been a number of great book covers that I have come across in the past year. I have also noticed a nice shift to photography on covers, both actual photographic images or references to photography – rather than just illustrations.
Here are two such examples:
In Eight Girls Taking Pictures by Whitney Otto, the image on the front is a classic medium format Rolleiflex twin-lens camera. In place of the brand name Rolleiflex, they replaced it with ‘A NOVEL’.
Now and Then by Alex Gross includes a painted cabinet card on the cover. Gross would find vintage cards and paint on them creating new, fictional charters out of real people – some inspired from movies like Star Wars and The Wizard of Oz, superheroes and even Bozo The Clown has made an appearance.
